the only time "windows update" works successfully is when i disable "windows firewall". I have now spent approximately 10hrs trying to solve this problem. So far I have tried the following steps:

A fake update would probably use a browser pop-up or something other than the real Windows Update. I haven't heard of a security breach at MS Update website -- news like that would be HUGE! Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Update (under System and Maintenance in the Home view). This is the only place where updates to Window should appear.
